Charlie's story
On December 7, 2017, nineteen dogs were seized by Animal Welfare. Charlie, his sister, and six other dogs were brought to Houlton Humane Society. The remaining dogs from the state seizure were placed in shelters around Maine. Unfortunately, none had a good start. Charlie was terrified of everything and would freak out when staff walked him. If we accidentally scuffed our feet or a car drove past, he would cower and try to get away.
Charlie was at the shelter for three years because he couldn't trust people other than a few staff he saw on a regular basis. Finally, the shelter manager took him on as a foster. The idea was to…
Our Featured Friends
Triton
This good boy is 4 years 3 months old. He’s a Pitbull mix. He needs to be the ONLY dog in the household, as he has had fights in the past with others. We want to make sure he is safe and can relax the rest of his life. He’s a happy boy and once established in his home I’m thinking he is going to be a pleaser to his human family. Don’t let the breed scare you, they unfortunately have a bad rep. Can’t say for sure around cats, so probably be safe to say no cats. He loves his blue squeaky ball; you can hear him playing with it with squeaking throughout the whole building! He takes it on walks most times as well, it’s the cutest thing. Please fill out an application and come meet this guy (as long as approved). I think he will steal your heart!
Onyx
This handsome boy is 5.5 years old. He is a big boy; he needs a human that is familiar with the breed German Shepards. He did live with cats, but did have a couple fights with his ‘son’ while living together. So not 100% sure with other dogs. In my personal opinion he would do best in a single dog household. He needs a lot of work mostly manners, being his age, he is set in his ways, but that does not mean he can’t be taught new ways. He gets over excited sometimes and will jump up and be mouthy at times, as I stated prior, he will need lots of training. I don’t even think before here he knew what a leash was. He will need some work on potty training as well. Unsure of being around children. He’s a good listener; I have high hopes for him. He loves going outside with his toy while holding it in his mouth; it’s the cutest thing. It’s like his safety blanket. He will need a firm hand but with training and patience he will make someone a great loving dog. Remember that change does not happen overnight.
Spike
Spike has jumped through hurtles to be here today; poor guy has had it rough. He is a 9-year-old Pitbull mix. He’s been in multiple fights so will need to be an ONLY dog household. From those fights he has sustained multiple injuries causing him to have a limp in his front right shoulder. With his stay here he seems to have anxiety, not sure if he had these issues before hand or not, he also drools a lot while barking. He will need vet care though out his life, there is no getting around that. As stated, he’s been through a lot. He will most likely have arthritis so plan on medicine for that. He does great while out on a leash, unless he sees another dog. Unsure about children in the household, and cats. He’s super sweet once he’s calmed down and loves his treats. He’s really good boy. He will need a lot of time and patience with his new humans. Remember change does not happen overnight.
