Charlie's story

On December 7, 2017, nineteen dogs were seized by Animal Welfare. Charlie, his sister, and six other dogs were brought to Houlton Humane Society. The remaining dogs from the state seizure were placed in shelters around Maine. Unfortunately, none had a good start. Charlie was terrified of everything and would freak out when staff walked him. If we accidentally scuffed our feet or a car drove past, he would cower and try to get away.

Charlie was at the shelter for three years because he couldn't trust people other than a few staff he saw on a regular basis. Finally, the shelter manager took him on as a foster. The idea was to…

Our spotlight on our furry friends in need of loving Home

Chancy

Chancy is a 12yo senior who came to us very ill. We discovered that Chancy has thyroid issues and is on medication for it and has been doing fantastic ever since.

Chancy is magnificent and he knows it as he is very vocal about it. He needs to be an only cat household. He is part of our Senior To Senior Program(but anyone can adopt him!), he was in a foster home and unfortunately returned because he talks too much. The only way he will stop meowing is if he is being held. He is as soft as velvet and wants nothing more then to be held and purr in your arms 24/7. He could seriously be one of those cats in a baby carrier and worn around the house. He would be in his glory. If you have the patience, are a good listener and can be diligent about his medication(2x a day!), then this ridiculously handsome guy may be the right fit for you! Please fill out an application or give us a call today!

Lulu

Meet Lulu! Lulu is is a 10yo Big ol’ Chonky kitty. How much does she weigh you ask? A lady never tells! Lulu had only 1 owner and came to us when her owner unfortunately passed. She was significantly overweight upon her arrival and we have worked with her on slowly shedding some of her extra love handles (loosing too much weight too fast can be stressful on kitties!). Lulu has the luxury of roaming free throughout the building to help keep her exercised. She is starting to show signs of stress and is becoming bald over her entire belly. We think the main cause is she wants to be the only kitty and a quieter environment. Other then what is mentioned she is a very lovey kitty and overall healthy. She follows you around and will lead you to her empty dish so you can see the dilemma she is having. She can not jump up on the furniture(yet!) If you think you have the quiet home she is looking for and can help with maintaining her weight management then please fill out an application. Lulu is an elder cat, so she can also be part of our Senior to Senior program. Please contact us with any questions!

Spike

Spike has jumped through hurtles to be here today; poor guy has had it rough. He is a 9-year-old Pitbull mix. He’s been in multiple fights so will need to be an ONLY dog household. From those fights he has sustained multiple injuries causing him to have a limp in his front right shoulder. With his stay here he seems to have anxiety, not sure if he had these issues before hand or not, he also drools a lot while barking. He will need vet care though out his life, there is no getting around that. As stated, he’s been through a lot. He will most likely have arthritis so plan on medicine for that. He does great while out on a leash, unless he sees another dog. Unsure about children in the household, and cats. He’s super sweet once he’s calmed down and loves his treats. He’s really good boy. He will need a lot of time and patience with his new humans. Remember change does not happen overnight.
