Shep in foster care so he can heal.

We’re always looking for people who want to help us make a difference. We are currently looking for:

On-site Volunteers

Foster Families Program

Fostering is a program run by the Houlton Humane Society that allows us to place our pets in a home setting instead of keeping them cooped up at the shelter. It also helps them to be and stay socialized with people until they are adopted.

The program works this way:

Instructions and Guidelines

Please read the following instructions carefully. The animal(s) entrusted to your care as a foster is waiting for adoption. It is crucial to adhere to the guidelines provided to ensure the well-being of the pet and facilitate a smooth adoption process.

Decision Making and Emergency Protocol

HHS makes all decisions regarding animal care. If an emergency arises, call us immediately so we can get the animal to a veterinarian. The health and safety of the pet is our top priority, and swift action is necessary in case of any urgent issues.

Responsibility of Foster Parent

  • These dogs and cats are the sole property of the Houlton Humane Society and HHS will be looking for an adoptive home or may have already found one.

  • If, at any time during their fostering, a person decides they want to be considered to adopt this animal, they may contact the shelter manager.

  • You will be called with dates and times for potential adopters to meet the pet you are fostering. It is essential that you make the pet available for these meetings, as they are crucial for finding a suitable forever home. Please ensure the pet is well-prepared and presentable for such meetings.

Health and Maintenance Checks

You will be called with dates and times for health checks, weight checks, flea treatment, etc. You will need to bring the animal to the shelter so we can perform what is needed. Regular health checks are vital to monitor the pet's well-being and address any medical concerns promptly.

General Care Guidelines

  • The foster parent takes full responsibility for the safety of this pet(s) while in their care.

  • Provide a safe, clean, and comfortable living environment for the pet.

  • Ensure the pet receives adequate nutrition, hydration, and exercise.

  • Monitor the pet's behavior and health daily, noting any changes or concerns.

  • Follow any specific care instructions provided by HHS.

  • Socializing is an important part of being a foster parent to our dogs.

    • Going for rides, nature walks, depending on the dog going into stores.

Communication

Maintain open and timely communication with HHS regarding the pet's status, including any behavioral or health issues observed. Report any emergencies or significant changes immediately.

Conclusion

By signing this agreement, you acknowledge the responsibility entrusted to you as a foster parent and agree to follow the guidelines and instructions provided by HHS. Your dedication and care are immensely valued and play a crucial role in the successful adoption of the pet.

Senior to Senior Foster Program

Senior Fostering is a new program offered by the Houlton Humane Society that tries to match senior citizens with one of our older long-term cats. This program gives seniors the opportunity to have a pet without the expense of adoption or vet care.

The program works this way:

  • While the pet will be living with you, it will remain the property of the shelter.

  • The shelter will continue providing vet care, food and litter but the pet will be in your home instead of in a shelter environment.

  • The shelter will not be looking to adopt the pet so it will stay with you as long as you want.

  • If any time you are unable to continue fostering, the shelter will rehome the pet or take the animal back to the shelter.

Senior to Senior Foster Program

The National Poll on Healthy Aging surveyed 2,051 adults aged 50 to 80 last fall, more than half of whom reported owning a pet. And 88% said that their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86% said their pets made them feel loved.
